Tell us about yourself?
Hi everyone, I'm Dom (BSci Hons, DipPFS). Financial Adviser enjoys golf and walking the dog (handle attached). Spurs supporter (sorry).
Tell us about your role?
Financial Adviser, looking after people's financial interests to help them achieve their life goals. It's cliche, but it's all about helping people prepare for the future financially, from young people starting out their working journey, to people in retirement and beyond.
How did you land your role?
I've been in the industry starting on the ground floor having finished University, and found that I really enjoyed the personal interactions with clients. I moved to the firm a year and a half back (new a friend at my current firm who told me to get in touch).
What do you enjoy about your role?
Helping clients, both on a personal level for them, as well as achieving my own objectives. Work with a great team at Cave & Sons too.
What do you enjoy the least in your role?
There are loads of rules and best practices to learn, and changes in legislation mean that the rules change too!
What is the typical progression path for Financial Advisers?
Financial Advisers continuously develop themselves, both with their interpersonal skills with clients, as well as their product knowledge and planning strategies. I'm looking to attain Chartered status too, there's always something new to learn!
Advice for anyone trying to get into Financial Advising?
Personality is important, clients will only ever deal with someone they trust.
Keeping up to date with industry trends is useful, it's no good knowing what best practice was 10 years ago.
Qualifications are important, but they are just the start.
It's one of the industries where the more experience you have, regardless of whether it's administration, dealing with clients or research, will always put you in a better position when you want to become an adviser.
